Since its inception, the Community Clinic has witnessed first hand the serious neglect and desperate need of the working poor for oral health care. Oral health means more than just sound teeth, serious oral disorders can undermine self image and self-esteem, discourage normal social interaction as well as incurring great financial cost. Moreover, recent research findings have pointed to possible associations between chronic oral infections and diabetes, heart and lung disease, stroke and low-birth weight premature births.
The patient is first assigned to a general dentist and if warranted, specialists are available. Because of the multiple needs and costs of dental care, the patient is provided dental care for their most prominent needs. The Community Clinic is the only organization in the nine-parish area that provides free dental services.
